History and Origins of Manassas, Virginia
Prior to being chartered as a town, Manassas was a railroad junction which linked Northern
Virginia and Washington, D.C. with the Shenandoah Valley and Richmond. Confederate troops
came through Manassas Junction as they arrived to fight in the First Battle of Bull Run in July of
1861, marking the first time in history that troops were transported by rail for battle. The Battle of
Bull Run became known as the first major land battle of the Civil War, and today the Manassas
National Battlefield Park is preserved Federal parkland.

After the Civil War, Manassas Junction grew into the Town of Manassas, and was chartered as
such in 1873. In 1975, the Town of Manassas became the independent City of Manassas.
Today, the city of Manassas offers residents a full range of modern conveniences while still
maintaining its original historic charm. The rich history of the city combined with its
contemporary comforts make Manassas a popular choice for residents and tourists alike.
